Even The Mentally Stable People Can Be Evil, 2022

7 x 9 CM

photography, acrylic, and graphite on 250 gsm paper

This project began as an exhibition at Blå Stället Konsthall titled “Manifestation of a Queer Diaspora.” It is a political, queer, and psychological study of my life, presented through photographs, installations, and paintings.

In Syria, a portrait of Bashar al-Assad appears in nearly every home and institution. It functions as an omnipresent eye, a symbol of surveillance and control. In this work, I focused on deforming his image as a way to confront and release the internalized fear it represents. By altering the picture, I sought to reclaim agency over an image that once enforced silence and to visualize the possibility of existing beyond the regime’s psychological reach.
